Ranked as one of the best golf teachers by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine, here are a few takeaways from her lesson on perfecting your swing.

Before anything else, you want to make sure you have good posture, alignment, aim, and grip. In every swing, it should be built from small to large. This means you need a continuous beginning to end, top to finish motion.

For today’s lesson, you want to get a lofted club. Loft refers to the angle of degrees in respect to vertical rather than the ground. A wedge, such as a pitching wedge or 8 iron, will work just fine for this lesson.

Stage 1

Start by practicing with a small swing. Make sure that your feet are close together and you have a minimal amount of wrist cock. Following this pose, you’re going to drag your handle on the way back to the ball so that it passes with the shaft at an angle.

During impact between the club and the ball, your shaft should be leaning forward so that your club swings downward at the ball. In completing this motion, you will have a low-finish so that your left arm and the shaft form a straight line.

  • Small Swing
  • Minimal Amount of Wrist-cock
  • Low Finish
Stage 2

To give your swing just a bit more power to push your golf ball further, you’ll want to add a hinge to your left wrist so that it forms a 90 degree angle between your left arm and the golf club.

  • Wider Stance
  • Slightly More Wrist-cock
  • Low Finish
Stage 3

At this stage, you’ll want to give your shoulder a slight turn. Keeping your front leg slightly bent, this will allow you to easily shift your weight as you swing. You should be loaded into the inside of your right foot.

  • Wider Stance
  • Wrist-cock
  • Shoulder Turn
  • Low Finish
Stage 4

For stage 4, your arms are going to rotate for the follow through. At the end of this follow through, your club should re-hinge, facing the opposite direction as the hinge in stage 2.

  • Wider Stance
  • Wrist-cock
  • Shoulder Turn
  • Right Arm Swivels Over Left
  • Rehinge on Follow Through
Stage 5

You’re ready for a full swing. In this motion, you’ll need a full body release. Your back leg will and upper body will shift to face the direction in which you’re swinging. At this stage, your front leg should be straight while your back leg should be bent. This is opposite to your stance in stage 3.

  • Wider Stance
  • Wrist-cock
  • Shoulder Turn
  • Right Arm Swivels Over Left
  • Rehinge on Follow Through
  • Full Body Turn

In Gale Peterson’s less, she teaches you how to build your swing from the ground up. By practicing your swing for each state, you will see major improvements to your overall golf game.
